Talen, in coordination with Luzerne County EMA (LCEMA) and Columbia County EMA (CCEMA), is updating alert and notification methods for nuclear emergencies to align with other emergency protocols. These changes, approved by FEMA and the NRC, will take effect on April 1, 2025.
What’s Changing?
Primary Alert Method: Wireless notifications via FEMA’s IPAWS-WEA will replace sirens.
Backup Alert Method: CodeRED Mass Notification will replace route alerting.
Tertiary Alert Method: Route alerting remains as an additional measure.
These updates will allow emergency alerts and instructions to be delivered faster and more effectively. Both IPAWS-WEA and CodeRED are trusted systems already used by emergency agencies nationwide, including LCEMA and CCEMA.
