GOOD NEWS FOR BLOOMSBURG HOMEOWNERS! ![]()
Bloomsburg residents with federal flood insurance will see even more savings on their policies thanks to the Town’s increased flood awareness and resilience efforts over the past five years.
What’s Changing?
Homeowners insured through FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program will now receive a 20% discount when their policies renew. This discount comes from FEMA’s Community Rating System, which evaluates how well municipalities inform and protect residents from flood risks.
Highest Score in Pennsylvania
Under the leadership of Charles Fritz, Director of Governmental Services and coordinator of the Town’s Community Resilience Program, Bloomsburg has earned the highest CRS score in the entire state.
How We Got Here
Over the last several years, the Town has expanded and strengthened its flood preparedness efforts, including:
• Adding flood-risk education to the Town’s annual recycling calendar
• Continuing property buyouts and supporting elevation projects with Columbia County and grant partners
• Providing FEMA materials at the Bloomsburg Public Library
• Posting regular flood-awareness updates on social media
• Maintaining a siren system to alert neighborhoods of flood emergencies
• Operating an officially recognized Flood Task Force, meeting quarterly
• Enhancing oversight of floodplain development through coordination with Code Enforcement
• Making all flood-related information available on the Town website
Where We Are Now
Bloomsburg has advanced to a Class 6 community, unlocking the new 20% insurance discount.
Special thanks to Charles Fritz; our Code Enforcement team Mike Reffeor and Kyle Bauman; and our Floodplain Manager, Phillip Prout with Barry Isett & Associates for their continued dedication to this important work!
