“Recycle With Us” 2023 Curbside Calendar
Recycling: It’s the Law
Recycling is mandatory for Town of Bloomsburg residents, businesses, schools, offices, multi-family housing units and organizers of special events. The Town of Bloomsburg was the first community in Pennsylvania to provide curbside collection of recycling starting in August of 1977. This year will mark the 45th year of curbside collection.

ELECTRONIC RECYCLING HAS BEEN SUSPENDED
Bloomsburg Recycling Center
Suspends Electronic Recycling Program until Further Notice Effective March 13, 2017
Bloomsburg Recycling Center is suspending their electronic recycling program that they’ve operated since 2003. This suspension will take effect on March 13, 2017. The Town came to this difficult decision after their electronic vendor canceled their recycling contract.
Back in 2010, the Covered Device Recycling Act (108) was passed to ban the landfilling of electronic covered devices such as TV’s, computers, monitors, printers and computer peripherals and to create a recycling outlet by forcing manufacturers to recycle the electronic products they were creating. However, there were several flaws within the Act and ultimately it created an imbalance of supply and demand and made it economically prohibitive for electronic recycling vendors to operate within the State of Pennsylvania. This situation has been and is continuing to occur across the state and has resulted in several county and municipal programs discontinuing their electronic recycling efforts.
The Town is exploring all avenues to establish a sustainable electronic recycling plan. In 2015 the Town recycled 446,865 pounds of electronics and recycled 275,725 pounds in 2016. With the substantial volumes generated a sustainable solution will not be resolved quickly hence the need for the suspension.
Residents should hold on to their electronic devices until a new program can be implemented. Our State Legislators are reviewing Act 108 and working on revisions that will create sustainable solutions.
